Christoph Lange

Who are you?

A behavioural biologist some long time ago, turned software developer and data scientist. I’m a ‘foodie’ – but just as for food, also for data: data is not just numbers. It’s the numbers and their meaning, their interplay, their taste in combination with context and more data. A bunch of numbers, a pile of data, when getting it served for the first time, it can be accessible, clean and talkative; or it can be quiet, secretive and just therefore interesting. I love data.

I like simplicity. Multiply two numbers? I’d rather use a slide rule than fire up an LLM. I prefer to go for the most explainable way for software and data analyses to work. Since, when something unexpected happens, it is easier to fix things when one can see why they went wrong.

In this spirit I worked in many different industries over the last decades: education, research, systems- and network administration, medical devices, automotive; and in all possible breadth: from small POCs and demonstrators to large multi-database pipelines.

What made you join Devies Digital Core?

To be honest? Devies’s approach is different. As soon as you meet us. And when I first met them, I met just the right kind of nerds, and I wanted to be a part of them.

We know things, already. And still also: we like to learn and try out new things. We love to get to know our customers’ worlds and see where we can help, support, and develop together with them. And while I could talk for hours about specific technologies and approaches, in the end it’s all about “making sense of data”; and about gaining insights where there were none before.

How can the industry maximize its use of you?

If there is the need and opportunity, I like to see myself as a mediator between computing and natural sciences: inspire each other side with their respective domain knowledge and possibilities.

I’m also very curious and love to learn new things; get a peek into industries I didn’t look into before and try to attack your specific pain points and develop solutions together with you. I try to keep a “beginner’s mind”, as the late Suzuki roshi said: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities. In the expert’s mind there are few.”

I like to work in small teams, or small groups in big teams. However is best to stay productive while still being able to inspire each other. But I wouldn’t say no either to a couple days focus retreat to just whip upp that odd POC.
